2010 Cycle Challenge Update
on March 6, 2010After hitting the snooze button a couple of times, I was tempted by the thought of breakfast and eventually made my way to the breakfast room at around 04h30. This marked the official start to our day. A few team members sat with baited breath at the thought of today’s distance, which is a definite test of endurance.
The team did their morning stretches under the guidance of one of the physiotherapists in order to prepare for the daunting 270km scheduled for the day. Two team members are celebrating their birthdays today and, after belting out “Happy Birthday”, the team was raring to go.
We left Lichtenburg on schedule at 05h30, passing through Sannieshof, onto Delareyville, where we stopped for the cyclists to ‘refuel’ with some snacks. The crisp, early morning held the promise of cooler weather which would have made things easier on the cyclists but things started to heat up an hour or two after sunrise.

Stopping for snacks in Delareyville
The onset of higher temperatures may slow the team down somewhat, especially if the wind picks up but they are determined to persevere.
After having been slowed down by two punctures, the schedule is still on track as we are about 30 km from Schweizer Reyneke where we’ll have a longer stop for the team to have lunch. After lunch, we’ll continue another 95km to Christiana.

Delareyville is named after the famous General Koos De la Rey and was founded in 1913 (after the Anglo-Boer War). The town is situated in the north western corner of the maize triangle, 96 km from Lichtenburg.

Hi Guys! You all look so sporty in your cycling gear. I think about you every day and wish I was there, but I’ll make sure to join you again next year.
Enjoy every moment and make the most of it. All the best for the rest of the tour and may you all arrive safely in the good spirit I used to enjoy so very much.
Maak die pas warm!
Yours in cycling,
