Runner’s World Pasta Party at Table Bay Hotel on 5 April

Sun International’s Table Bay Hotel at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town will be hosting a 5-star Two Oceans Pasta Party on 5 April in collaboration with Runner’s World Magazine. Liezel van der Westhuizen will be the MC for the night. She is well-known as a television and radio presenter and is also an exemplary athlete having competed in the Ironman and in the 2012 Dusi Canoe marathon held in Natal this February.

Guest speaker for the night is Dr. Ross Tucker. He has a BSc (Med) (Hons) Exercises Science Degree and PhD from the Sports Science Institute. He spends his days working for the Sports Science Institute and SA Sevens rugby. He’s currently researching barefoot running, fatigue and performance. In January 2012, he was part of the world’s first expedition to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, barefoot. This year, he’ll be running his 8th Two Oceans.

Executive Chef, Dallas Orr knows a thing or two about catering for athletes, having cooked for several of the teams during the World Cup Soccer and the Wallabies tour. He also lays on a special menu every year for Argus participants.

“The more protein and carbohydrates runners eat, the more endurance they will have,” says Orr. “Carbohydrate intake influences how much glycogen is stored in the muscles. Athletes also need protein for muscle growth and strength, and vitamins and minerals to balance their energy intake.

The starter menu includes, amongst other dishes; Chicken and wild rice salad, Sweet potato salad and Quinoa salad.

Wild Rice contains complex carbs, protein, fibre, and micronutrients that make it a perfect food for runners to fuel up on. Sweet potatoes contain important carbs and are an excellent source of vitamin A, are powerful antioxidants and they’re also a good source of vitamin C, potassium and iron. Quinoa is not only packed with carbs, it’s also very rich in protein.
