The Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathonon April 7, 2010
The Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon’s history dates back to 1970, where only 26 runners lined up at the starting line of the race. Over the years, it has developed, gained popularity and made its own mark in the sporting industry. Today, it is regarded as one of the world’s most beautiful marathons. The Marathon is known all over the world and attracts people from both the Western Cape region and further afield, with approximately 26, 000 participants hailing from all over the world. The participants enjoy magnificent scenery and an all-round fitness test, all powered by a great vibe, avid supporters and a tangible team spirit!
The Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon caters for all people – offering something for the professional, competitive athletes, the weekend warriors as well as beginners. The selection of marathons to partake in includes a 56km ultra marathon, the more popular 21km half marathon and a 5km or 2.5km marathon.
Old Mutual has been the title sponsor of this event for ten years now. Old Mutual title sponsorship includes the Old Mutual Comedy Encounters, The Old Mutual Summer Sunset Concerts and The Old Mutual Two Oceans Fun Runs. Old Mutual has been active in this event and their passion has developed along the years to provide a strong partnership.
This year’s race saw saw Lesotho national, Mabhuthile Lebopo win the men’s race in an incredible 03:06:18, whilst Olesya Nurgalieva from Russia took home the esteemed woman’s title with a time of 03:41:53.
What makes this event even more exciting is there is always an array of things on offer for everyone to enjoy, for the running participants as well as the family supporters and friends. It was a full four day festival with comedy shows which ran from the 25th March till 1st April. There were a variety of fun runs where children and adults enjoyed a great time out and about, lastly the Encouters Summer Concert offered a great musical performance on the 4th April.
Family and friends visiting the Cape over the Easter weekend enjoyed a fun-filled time partaking in all sorts of activities on the 25th March to the 4th of April. Be sure to not miss out on next year’s event!
